Estonia hosts the first International Cyber Security Summer School

10. july 2015

Information Technology Foundation for Education in Estonia (HITSA) together with Tallinn University of Technology and the Ministry of Education and Research organise the Cyber Security Summer School Estonia on July 13-17 2015 in Laulasmaa.

Questions regarding Information Security will be investigated: how to keep data safe, how to safely share it, how to anonymise it, and what it takes to reverse engineer data, etc.

The Cyber Security Summer School is chaired by Professor Olaf Maennel of the Tallinn University of Technology and professor Jon Crowcroft of the University of Cambridge.
The summer school supports Estonia’s image as a hub of excellence in cyber defence. The experience of Estonia will be used to discuss the benefits, concerns and technical details.

There are 70 participants from all over the world, Chairman of HITSA, Mr Erki Urva notes that the summer school enlarges the international notoriety of Estonian IT education and allows us to accept more devoted students to masters and doctorate studies. The Summer School also helps to make closer contacts between Estonian and international university staff, Mr Urva adds.

The speakers and mentors of the summer school are from Estonia, Europe and the US. The first session on Monday, July 13 will be delivered by Professor Steven M. Bellovin from Columbia University. The Estonian e-success story will be presented by Jaan Priisalu (Senior Fellow at NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence) and architects of e-Estonia Andres Kütt, Heiko Vainsalu and Mark Erlich (Estonian Information System Authority), Kristjan Vassil from University of Tartu presents the e-voting in Estonia.

Among speakers there are George Danezis (University College London), Mehis Hakkaja (Clarified Security), Tristan Henderson (University of St Andrews), Richard Kemmerer (University of Santa Barbara), Vern Paxson (UC Berkeley) Walter Willinger (Niksun), Ben Zevenbergen (University of Oxford) and Richard Gold (Digital Shadows).

Professor Olaf Maennel hopes that this Summer School with the very high level of speakers will polish Estonia’s excellence in cyber security issues.

The summer school is organised under the international brand of the Estonian IT Academy – Study IT in Estonia. The cooperation programme is run by the Republic of Estonia, Estonian universities and the IT industry for securing the required labour force for the sector and creating preconditions for Estonia’s growth through ICT.
